A United Nations Conference on the fight against corruption began Monday in the Moroccan city of Marrakech (South), during which Morocco has proposed the creation of an International Observatory on corruption.
According to a text of King Mohamed VI, the observatory, once created, would be mandated to document good practices in combating corruption and to provide the States Parties so that they can use them as part of their national prevention programs.
This would allow assisting and supporting countries in their efforts for reform programs on the application of the provisions of the UN Convention against corruption.
Corruption is devastating in poor countries; it prevents economic growth and diverts funds for key sectors like health and education, according to experts.
Approximately one trillion dollars are diverted each year by bride, according to the World Bank.
