Palestine was admitted Monday to the status of full member of Unesco; a diplomatic victory for the Palestinians who seek recognition of their state.
The admission of Palestine as a member of Unesco was decided at the General Conference of all Member States, according to the resolution adopted by 107 votes to 52 votes against and 14 abstentions, Monday at the headquarters of the Unesco in Paris.
All Arab countries, Africa and Latin America have voted for the accession of Palestine. France has taken the decision to approve although expressing reservations about the approach by the Palestinians, while the U.S. has deemed the accession of Palestine premature and counterproductive.
In addition to the United States, Germany and Canada voted against, while Italy and the United Kingdom abstained.
