An arsenal of weapons and ammunition belonging to the former Libyan regime is in the desert south of Sirte, without any supervision, according to a Western media. The arsenal counts thousands of tons of ammunition.

About a hundred concrete bunkers, used for storage of and Russian and French ammunition contain large quantities of arms and ammunition. About 8000 of 100 mm are stocked in one of these bunkers, the sources said. The others contain hundreds of packed bombs of 500 and 900 kg, rockets, artillery shells and mortars, cluster bombs and various other types of ammunition.

Thousands of boxes of artillery ammunition are littering the sand in the desert, scattered over dozens of hectares; tens of thousands of tons, according to an inspector of Human Rights Watch organization.

In another site in Sirte, where Gaddafi was cut off before being killed Thursday, members of HRW organization discovered 14 empty cases of SA-24 missiles. These are sophisticated Russian surface to air missiles that can reach civilian aircraft in flight.

According to HRW, the National Transitional Council (NTC), failed to secure weapons stockpiles, though the latter was informed by HRW and NATO of the danger they may represent.
